Former Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Queiroz is back in international management after Ghana confirmed his return as head coach of the Black Stars.
The experienced Portuguese tactician has been handed a second spell in charge of Ghana after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) reached an agreement with him to lead the national team into the next phase of its programme.
Queiroz’s new mandate is set to begin during the upcoming international window, just weeks after his previous spell with Ghana came to an end.
The decision represents a remarkable return for the 73-year-old, who was involved in Ghana’s campaign at the recently concluded 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The GFA said discussions with the association and Ghana’s Ministry of Sports and Recreation ultimately resulted in an agreement for Queiroz to take charge once again.
The association believes his wealth of international experience and familiarity with the Black Stars make him the right man to guide the team forward.
For South African football supporters, Queiroz is a familiar figure. He previously coached Bafana Bafana from 2000 to 2002, helping the national team qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup before leaving his position ahead of the tournament.
Since then, the Portuguese coach has built a lengthy international résumé. His career has included national-team roles with Portugal, Iran, Colombia and Egypt, while he also worked alongside Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
Now, his attention turns back to Ghana, where the immediate challenge will be preparing the Black Stars for the next phase of their competitive programme.
One of the biggest priorities will be the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Ghana have been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, Gambia and Somalia, setting up a demanding qualification campaign.
The return of Queiroz gives Ghana a coach who already knows the environment and has experience working at the highest level of international football.
For the Black Stars, the hope will be that familiarity can quickly translate into results.
Ghana currently sit 65th in the FIFA men’s world rankings and 14th in Africa, meaning there is plenty of room for improvement as the team looks towards its next major objective.
For Queiroz, meanwhile, this is another opportunity to add to an already extensive international coaching career — and this time, he will be hoping his second chapter with Ghana lasts considerably longer.
The Black Stars have chosen experience. Now Queiroz must prove that the reunion can deliver the results Ghana expect.
