Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s future at Kaizer Chiefs is becoming an increasingly interesting talking point after the long-serving midfielder found himself on the fringes of the first-team setup.
The 26-year-old has been part of the Chiefs senior side for almost a decade after progressing through the club’s youth ranks, but his recent lack of playing time has raised questions about where he currently stands under head coach Fernando Da Cruz.
Ngcobo’s Chiefs Role Under Scrutiny
Ngcobo began the new campaign by featuring in Chiefs’ opening two matches, including the win over Kruger United and the MTN8 defeat to Golden Arrows.
Since then, however, his involvement has dropped dramatically.
The attacking midfielder was an unused substitute during the 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns and subsequently failed to make the matchday squad for clashes against Richards Bay and Sekhukhune.
That represents a significant change for a player who has spent years within the Chiefs first-team environment.
Ngcobo made his senior debut in 2017 after coming through the club’s development system. Since then, he has accumulated 129 appearances for Amakhosi, scoring eight goals and providing three assists.
However, his attacking numbers have not developed at the rate some supporters may have hoped.
He has not scored more than two goals in a single season since the 2020-21 campaign, while his combined tally across the last three Betway Premiership seasons stands at just two goals.
With competition for places increasing, those numbers could make it difficult for Ngcobo to force his way back into Da Cruz’s plans.
Is This The Beginning Of The End?
There has been no official confirmation from Kaizer Chiefs that Ngcobo is being pushed towards the exit door.
Nevertheless, his recent omission from matchday squads has inevitably fuelled speculation about his future.
For a player affectionately known as Mshini and regarded as one of the club’s homegrown talents, a prolonged spell on the sidelines would be a major development.
The key question now is whether Ngcobo can use the opportunity when it arrives to convince Da Cruz that he still has an important role to play at Naturena.
Chiefs Look To Build Momentum
Despite Ngcobo’s personal situation, Chiefs have made a reasonably solid start to the Betway Premiership campaign.
The Glamour Boys remain unbeaten in the league, collecting eight points from their opening four matches under Da Cruz.
Their next challenge comes on Sunday, 6 September, when Chiefs host Siwelele in a 15:30 kick-off.
After being held to a 2-2 draw by Richards Bay in their previous league outing, Amakhosi will be looking to return to winning ways.
For Ngcobo, the match could provide another opportunity to watch from the sidelines — unless Da Cruz decides that it is time to bring the experienced academy product back into the fold.
One thing is certain: after nearly nine years in the Chiefs first team, Ngcobo’s current situation is worth watching closely.
