Orlando Pirates' injury crisis has deepened after Gamphani Lungu was stretchered off. The winger has enjoyed a superb start to the season.

Orlando Pirates’ injury problems are beginning to pile up at a worrying stage of the season.

The Buccaneers already have several important players on the treatment table, and now one of their early-season standout performers faces an anxious wait after being carried off during the weekend’s big victory.

Gamphani Lungu adds to Pirates’ injury concerns

Gamphani Lungu has emerged as the latest concern for Orlando Pirates after suffering an injury during the club’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Kruger United.

The Zambian winger has enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign, registering four goals and two assists in five Betway Premiership appearances.

His form had made him one of Pirates’ most dangerous attacking players, making the timing of the injury particularly concerning.

Lungu was stretchered off during the match, leaving the club waiting for a clearer assessment of the extent of the problem.

For a Pirates side preparing for a busy run of fixtures, a lengthy absence would be a significant blow.

Pirates already dealing with several injuries

Lungu’s setback comes as the Buccaneers attempt to manage an increasingly crowded injury list.

Evidence Makgopa is expected to spend up to two months on the sidelines after aggravating an existing knee problem.

The striker played through the issue during the FIFA World Cup but now requires time to recover.

Midfielder Thalente Mbatha is also dealing with a knee injury and is expected to undergo surgery, while Sihle Nduli picked up a knock during Pirates’ 1-1 draw with AmaZulu in August.

That leaves coach Jose Riveiro with several important players unavailable as the club prepares for a demanding period of the campaign.

Injuries create opportunities for Pirates’ youngsters

The growing injury list could, however, provide an opportunity for some of Pirates’ emerging players.

With Nduli and Mbatha unavailable in midfield, players including Cemran Dansin, Thapelo Mokobodi, Simphiwe Selepe and Mthiyane have already been given opportunities in the engine room.

Those players could now find themselves playing a much bigger role than initially anticipated.

While injuries can disrupt a team’s plans, they can also accelerate the development of younger squad members — particularly when there is a packed fixture schedule.

Champions League challenge arrives

Pirates will not have much time to dwell on their injury problems.

The Buccaneers are preparing for a CAF Champions League qualifying double-header against La Cure Waves FC, with the two fixtures scheduled for 6 and 12 September.

That makes squad depth increasingly important.

Pirates will be hoping that Lungu’s injury is not as serious as initially feared, particularly given his outstanding contribution during the opening matches of the season.

With domestic and continental ambitions to balance, the club will need as many of its key players available as possible.

Can Pirates cope with the injury crisis?

The Buccaneers have made an encouraging start despite their fitness concerns, but losing more first-team players could test the depth of the squad.

Lungu’s situation is now one to watch closely.

If he is ruled out for an extended period, Pirates will need other attacking players to step up — while the club’s emerging midfielders could also be asked to carry greater responsibility.

Pirates fans, can the Buccaneers overcome this growing injury crisis and still challenge for major silverware this season?
