Mamelodi Sundowns could be heading back to South America as they look to strengthen their midfield following the loss of Jayden Adams.
The Brazilians have reportedly identified Colombian defensive midfielder Josen Escobar as a potential addition to their squad.
According to Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra, Sundowns have expressed strong interest in the 21-year-old Colombia U23 international, who currently plays for América de Cali.
Sundowns face competition for Escobar
Sundowns are not the only club monitoring Escobar’s situation.
Mexico’s Santos Laguna and an unnamed Bulgarian club are reportedly also interested in securing the midfielder, although both are said to be exploring a loan deal.
Sundowns, however, could have an advantage if they decide to pursue a permanent transfer.
Escobar is reportedly valued at around R37 million by América de Cali, a figure Sundowns may be prepared to meet as they search for midfield reinforcements.
The Tshwane giants have also recently created room for another foreign player after parting ways with Portuguese midfielder Miguel Reisinho.
Escobar brings plenty of experience despite his age
Despite being only 21, Escobar has already accumulated significant senior experience.
The defensive midfielder has made 117 official appearances for América de Cali, contributing four goals and seven assists during his time with the club.
He also spent a short spell with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, where he made eight appearances.
His profile as a defensive midfielder could make him an interesting option for Sundowns as the club continues to reshape its squad.
A new South American signing for Sundowns?
Sundowns have developed a reputation for looking beyond South Africa when strengthening their squad, and a move for Escobar would once again underline their interest in South American talent.
With competition for the Colombian already emerging, the next question is whether Sundowns will turn their reported interest into a formal offer.
For now, Escobar remains one of the names linked with a move to Chloorkop — but the reported R37 million price tag could be the key factor in determining whether the transfer materialises.
