A former Kaizer Chiefs academy defender could be involved in one of the biggest games of his young career when Sabah FK travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League.
At just 22, Aden McCarthy has already made a remarkable transition from the Amakhosi academy to European football, and a potential appearance against one of the world’s most famous clubs would represent another major milestone in his career.
From Naturena to the Champions League
McCarthy developed through the Kaizer Chiefs academy before progressing into the senior setup and earning an opportunity to establish himself in the Betway Premiership.
His performances eventually attracted interest from abroad, leading to a move to Azerbaijan in June 2026, when Sabah FK completed his signing from Kaizer Chiefs.
The move has quickly opened the door to Champions League football.
McCarthy has been gradually introduced to the Sabah first team as the Azerbaijani club navigated the qualifying rounds. So far this season, the young centre-back has accumulated 31 minutes, coming off the bench against The New Saints and Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
Sabah’s successful qualification means McCarthy is now part of a squad preparing for a fixture that few young South African footballers get to experience: a Champions League encounter at Old Trafford.
McCarthy takes aim at Old Trafford opportunity
The defender was included in Sabah’s travelling squad for the trip to England and was part of the team’s preparations at Manchester United’s iconic stadium.
For McCarthy, even being involved in the occasion is significant. But having made the journey this far, the former Chiefs academy player will surely have his sights set on getting onto the pitch.
A Champions League appearance against Manchester United would be a huge statement for a player who only recently made the move from South African football to Europe.
The match is scheduled for 21:00 South African time, with the game set to be broadcast live on SuperSport 203.
Another South African chapter in Champions League history
If McCarthy makes his appearance, he will add his name to a long list of South Africans who have competed in Europe’s premier club competition.
Benni McCarthy remains the only South African to have won the UEFA Champions League, doing so with FC Porto in 2004. He also remains the country’s leading Champions League goalscorer, with nine goals in 28 appearances for Ajax and Porto.
Other notable South Africans to feature in the competition include Steven Pienaar, Quinton Fortune, Lucas Radebe, Thulani Serero and Percy Tau.
Fortune’s Champions League appearances came during his time at Manchester United, while Radebe famously captained Leeds United during their run to the 2000/01 semi-finals.
Now, McCarthy has an opportunity to write his own chapter.
