Orlando Pirates could be approaching one of their biggest transfer decisions of the window, with the club reportedly facing a major call over the future of Oswin Appollis.
With the transfer window closing later this month, the Pirates hierarchy must weigh up whether to hold on to one of their most important attacking players or cash in if a lucrative overseas offer arrives.
A potential R50 million-plus decision could have major consequences for the defending Betway Premiership champions.
Pirates must decide how much Appollis is worth
According to widespread local reports, an unnamed foreign club is interested in Bafana Bafana winger Oswin Appollis.
Should a substantial offer arrive, Pirates’ board will have to decide whether the financial reward is too good to turn down.
Appollis only joined the Buccaneers in July 2025 but quickly established himself as an important part of the team.
The 25-year-old made 30 league appearances last season, featuring in every Betway Premiership match, while contributing nine goals and six assists.
His consistency and availability have made him a valuable asset for Pirates, meaning replacing his production would be no simple task.
The big question is therefore not only whether Pirates receive an offer, but what price would be enough to convince the club to sell?
Nkota return could soften the blow
One factor potentially influencing the situation is the return of Mohau Nkota, who has rejoined Pirates on loan.
The 21-year-old spent last season in the Saudi Pro League, making 21 appearances and registering two goals and three assists.
His return gives Pirates another option in the wide areas and could provide additional depth should the club eventually decide to part ways with Appollis.
However, Nkota will face competition for a starting role from Tshepang Moremi, Oswin Appollis and Gamphani Lungu.
With only two wide positions available in the expected setup, the battle for places could become particularly interesting if Appollis remains at the club.
Pirates’ busy schedule continues
The immediate priority for Pirates is continental football.
The defending Betway Premiership champions drew 0-0 against Mauritian side La Cure Waves FC in the first leg of their CAF Champions League qualifier.
The second leg is scheduled for Saturday, 12 September, giving Pirates the opportunity to secure their progression.
They will then return to domestic action against Durban City on 17 September.
Pirates have been in impressive form domestically, winning their last four outings across league and MTN8 competition by scores of 1-0, 2-0, 3-0 and 4-0.
That sequence has underlined their strength and attacking depth, but the possible departure of Appollis would give coach Abdeslam Ouaddou another major selection and squad-building challenge.
