Pitso Mosimane is preparing for his first competitive match since returning as Bafana Bafana head coach, with South Africa set to open their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Guinea on Saturday.
The match will give supporters their first competitive look at Mosimane’s second spell in charge, with plenty of attention expected on his tactical approach and team selection.
South Africa face Guinea on Saturday, 26 September, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00.
How could Mosimane line up Bafana?
One of the biggest selection questions concerns the centre-forward position.
There has been speculation that Shandre Campbell could be used as a false nine, while experienced attacker Themba Zwane is another possible option.
Based on the squad available and the combinations being considered, a possible Bafana XI could be:
Ronwen Williams; Kamogelo Sebelebele, Olwethu Makhanya, Ime Okon, Aubrey Modiba; Yaya Sithole, Teboho Mokoena; Oswin Appollis, Relebohile Mofokeng, Thapelo Maseko; Shandre Campbell.
This remains a predicted lineup rather than an officially confirmed starting XI.
Mofokeng arrives in strong form
Relebohile Mofokeng is another player attracting plenty of attention ahead of the Guinea clash.
The Bafana playmaker recently converted the decisive penalty in a shootout victory over Club Brugge in the Belgian Super Cup final.
He has also continued to make an impact for Union SG, scoring his first Europa League goal in a 3-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen and adding three league goals in five appearances.
Union SG have also enjoyed an impressive run of results, winning six consecutive matches across competitions, with Mofokeng contributing an assist against Royal Antwerp.
His current form could make him an important attacking outlet for Mosimane.
Aubaas back in the Bafana picture
Bathusi Aubaas has once again been included in the national-team setup.
The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has made three Betway Premiership appearances this season and has registered one assist.
His selection is likely to generate discussion among supporters, particularly given the competition for places in Mosimane’s midfield.
A new chapter for Mosimane
Saturday’s fixture represents the beginning of Mosimane’s second tenure as Bafana Bafana coach.
Rather than completely rebuilding the side, Mosimane has indicated that he intends to build on the foundations already established by the previous coaching regime while introducing his own ideas.
