Kaizer Chiefs can secure a potential R6.6 million payday by beating Red Arrows and reaching the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

Kaizer Chiefs have quickly shifted their attention towards continental football after their MTN8 disappointment, with a lucrative R6.6 million prize potentially waiting if they can secure a place in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

Amakhosi have been drawn against Zambian outfit Red Arrows in the second qualifying round, setting up a crucial two-legged battle that could have major implications for the club’s season.

Chiefs target continental redemption

Chiefs were unable to turn their MTN8 campaign into silverware, but the CAF Confederation Cup provides Fernando Da Cruz’s side with another opportunity to compete for a trophy while generating valuable revenue.

The Glamour Boys featured in the Confederation Cup group stage last season and looked capable of progressing into the knockout rounds after putting themselves in a strong position.

Their campaign ultimately ended after a defeat to Egyptian giants Zamalek in their final group match.

Chiefs will now have to navigate another qualifying campaign if they are to return to the group stage.

Red Arrows stand in Chiefs’ way

The first meeting with Red Arrows is scheduled for Saturday, 17 October, with the Zambian club hosting Chiefs at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Amakhosi will then return to South Africa for the decisive second leg.

The return fixture is scheduled for Friday, 23 October, at Moses Mabhida Stadium, with kick-off set for 18:00.

The aggregate winner will advance to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

For Chiefs, there is much more at stake than simply progressing to the next phase.

R6.6 million prize up for grabs

A place in the Confederation Cup group stage comes with a guaranteed minimum prize of USD400,000, which is approximately R6.6 million.

That financial incentive makes the Red Arrows tie particularly significant for the Soweto giants, who will be hoping to combine continental progress with a welcome boost to their finances.

Qualification would also give Chiefs another extended run in African competition and the chance to compete against some of the continent’s top clubs.

More prize money opportunities ahead

The Confederation Cup is not the only competition offering Chiefs an opportunity to add to their trophy cabinet and revenue streams.

Amakhosi are also set to compete in the Carling Knockout Cup later in the year, giving them another route to silverware and prize money.

After the frustration of their MTN8 exit, Chiefs therefore have plenty of motivation to respond strongly.

The immediate target, however, is clear: overcome Red Arrows, reach the Confederation Cup group stage and secure the potentially valuable R6.6 million payday.

Can Amakhosi get the job done against Red Arrows?
