Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are set for another blockbuster MTN8 final, with the two South African giants meeting at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
The Buccaneers will face the Brazilians on 10 October 2026, with kickoff scheduled for 18:00 in Durban.
More than 50 000 supporters are expected at the sold-out venue as the two heavyweight clubs battle for the first major piece of silverware of the season.
Pirates and Sundowns meet again in the MTN8 final
Saturday’s showdown will be a repeat of the 2023 MTN8 final, when Pirates edged Sundowns on penalties after a goalless draw.
The Buccaneers eventually won 3-1 on penalties, securing another piece of MTN8 silverware.
Three years later, the sides meet again with another final at stake.
Pirates chasing more MTN8 glory
History gives Orlando Pirates plenty of confidence heading into the final.
Since the MTN took over sponsorship of the competition in 2008, the Buccaneers have established themselves as one of the dominant forces in the tournament.
Pirates have won the MTN8 on seven occasions since 2008, with triumphs coming in 2010, 2011, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024, according to the supplied record.
The Buccaneers are also targeting another successful final as they look to continue their recent dominance of the competition.
Sundowns looking to add another MTN8 crown
Mamelodi Sundowns have enjoyed enormous success across South African football, but their MTN8 record since 2008 is considerably more modest.
The Brazilians have lifted the trophy once during the period, winning the competition in 2021 after defeating Cape Town City on penalties.
Sundowns’ biggest defeat in an MTN8 final came in 2016, when they lost 3-0 to Bidvest Wits.
They will now have another opportunity to add to their MTN8 trophy cabinet when they face Pirates in Durban.
Another heavyweight final awaits
With Pirates chasing another MTN8 title and Sundowns looking to reclaim the trophy, Saturday’s final promises another high-profile battle between two of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
The sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium should provide an electric atmosphere as the Buccaneers and Brazilians go head-to-head.
Will Pirates continue their MTN8 dominance, or can Sundowns end their rivals’ reign?
