Kaizer Chiefs are sweating over Luke Baartman’s fitness after the midfielder picked up an injury ahead of their Betway Premiership clash with Stellenbosch.

Kaizer Chiefs have been handed a potential setback ahead of their return to Betway Premiership action, with Luke Baartman being monitored after picking up an injury.

The 20-year-old has been an important part of Fernando Da Cruz’s plans this season, featuring prominently for Amakhosi as they look to build on a promising start to the campaign.

Baartman injury concerns Chiefs

Chiefs’ medical team is keeping a close eye on Baartman’s condition ahead of next week’s clash against Stellenbosch FC.

The club confirmed that the midfielder sustained an injury and that further updates on his progress, as well as other sidelined players, will be provided closer to the fixture.

Baartman’s absence would be a blow for Da Cruz, particularly given his regular involvement this season. The young midfielder has impressed with his energy and performances and has quickly established himself as an important option in the Chiefs squad.

The positive news for Amakhosi is that three players have returned from international duty with the South African U23 side, giving Da Cruz additional options as he prepares for the demanding run of fixtures ahead.

Chiefs return after three-week break

Kaizer Chiefs will finally return to competitive action after a three-week break when they welcome Stellenbosch to FNB Stadium next Tuesday evening.

Amakhosi currently sit fourth on the Betway Premiership table with 13 points from seven matches. They will be looking to turn that solid start into a genuine title challenge when Gavin Hunt’s Stellenbosch side arrive in Soweto.

Stellenbosch are seventh with nine points and will be determined to close the gap on the teams above them. The visitors also have several familiar faces with links to Chiefs, adding another layer of intrigue to the encounter.

For Da Cruz, however, the pressure is clear.

Chiefs are already seven points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, despite the campaign still being in its early stages. Dropping points at home could make the gap increasingly difficult to close.

Can Chiefs keep their title hopes alive?

The clash against Stellenbosch represents an important opportunity for Amakhosi to make a statement.

A home victory would strengthen their position near the top of the table and keep their title ambitions firmly on track. But another disappointing result could increase scrutiny on Da Cruz and his team.

With Baartman’s availability still uncertain, Chiefs will hope the youngster recovers in time to play a role in what promises to be a crucial encounter.

Kaizer Chiefs face Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium in Soweto on Tuesday at 19:30.

So, are Amakhosi genuine title contenders this season, or is it too early to make that call?
