Mamelodi Sundowns’ route to MTN8 glory against Orlando Pirates could run through three players: defender Grant Kekana, creator Nuno Santos and striker Brayan León. All three are expected to shape the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium (18:00 kick-off).
Grant Kekana: The Experienced Organiser
The 33-year-old centre-back brings maturity and composure to the Sundowns defence. His job is to keep the backline organised and hold the team’s shape under pressure.
He has been reliable this season, with a 94.7% pass completion rate from 465 successful passes in domestic matches. He has also made 14 clearances and completed 21 accurate long balls, helping Sundowns start attacks from deep.
Nuno Santos: The Creative Key
Santos is expected to unlock a well-drilled Pirates defence. He has already shown he can deliver on a big stage: his brace in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Saudi side Al Ahli.
Beyond the two goals, he completed 40 accurate passes, made six ball recoveries and won four physical duels, which shows his value in transitions between defence and attack.
Brayan León: The Sniper
León carries much of the goal threat. The Colombian has troubled Pirates before, scoring a match-winning brace against the Buccaneers in an earlier meeting.
This season he has three goals and one assist in seven league starts, with 21 shots (11 on target) and five big chances created. His movement, work rate and finishing make him a constant danger. He will need to take the chances his teammates create if Sundowns are to lift the trophy.
