Former Springbok winger Courtnall Skosan has officially called time on his professional rugby career, bringing an end to a remarkable 16-year journey that took him from South African rugby to the international stage.
The 35-year-old confirmed his retirement in an emotional social media message, reflecting on the opportunities, challenges and unforgettable memories that shaped his career.
Skosan expressed gratitude to the coaches, teammates, clubs, supporters, friends and family members who supported him throughout his journey, while making it clear that retirement marks the beginning of a new chapter.
“I am forever grateful for every opportunity, every trial, and every triumph,” Skosan wrote, adding that “the best is yet to come” as he looks towards life beyond professional rugby.
Courtnall Skosan’s Springbok Journey
Skosan earned his first Springbok cap in June 2017 when South Africa faced France at Loftus Versfeld.
The speedster went on to represent the national team in 12 Test matches, scoring two tries during his international career.
Although his time in the green and gold was relatively short, Skosan became known for his pace, attacking instincts and ability to finish scoring opportunities on the wing.
His international experience formed an important part of a career that saw him compete at several of the highest levels of professional rugby.
A Successful Career Across South Africa and Europe
At franchise level, Skosan made a significant impact with the Lions, becoming one of the Johannesburg-based side’s notable attacking threats.
He played more than 80 matches for the franchise, scoring 38 tries and helping the Lions reach three consecutive Super Rugby finals.
His performances established him as a dangerous winger and earned him opportunities to test himself in different rugby environments.
Skosan also represented the Bulls before taking his talents overseas to England, where he played for Northampton Saints in the English Premiership.
He later returned to South Africa, featuring for the Stormers and Western Province as he continued his professional journey.
Across those teams and competitions, Skosan built a career defined by speed, commitment and a willingness to take on new challenges.
‘Thank You, Rugby’: Skosan Reflects on 16 Years
In his retirement announcement, Skosan shared an emotional tribute to the sport that had shaped much of his life.
Reflecting on the difficulty of putting 16 years of memories into words, he thanked everyone who had contributed to his journey, from his early beginnings in Northpine to competing on the international stage.
“It took me three months to summarise the best 16 years of my life. Thank you, rugby!” he wrote.
He also added: “The boots may be hung up, but the purpose remains.”
The message captured both his appreciation for the game and his determination to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
For Skosan, retirement is not simply the end of a playing career. It is a chance to take the lessons, relationships and experiences gained through rugby into a new phase of life.
A New Chapter Begins for the Former Springbok
After 16 years in professional rugby, Skosan leaves the game with international honours, an impressive franchise record and experience gained across South Africa and England.
His retirement closes a significant chapter for a player who represented several leading clubs and earned the opportunity to wear the Springbok jersey.
While supporters will no longer see him racing down the wing on match day, his contribution to South African rugby remains part of his legacy.
As he begins life beyond the professional game, Skosan’s message is one of gratitude, reflection and optimism.
Congratulations on a memorable career, Courtnall Skosan.
