South African music takes a cross-cultural turn with the release of Digital Maskandi Vol. 1, a collaborative compilation from Durban Media House and Africori Music Group. The project brings Maskandi together with hip-hop, Xigaza, R&B and pop, creating space for traditional sounds to connect with contemporary musical influences.

After a month-long rollout featuring individual singles and artist introductions, the compilation brings established names and emerging performers into one project. Its central theme is the relationship between musical heritage and modern creativity, showing how different genres can come together while maintaining their own identities.

Rather than moving away from Maskandi’s roots, Digital Maskandi Vol. 1 builds on the genre’s signature guitar arrangements, expressive vocals and storytelling. Contemporary production and diverse musical influences add fresh textures, allowing the featured artists to explore new creative possibilities.

“Martell” Leads the Compilation

At the forefront of the project is “Martell,” featuring Njabulo Langa, Umqansa and Quality Biyela. The collaboration reflects the compilation’s emphasis on bringing artists together, with Maskandi remaining central to the sound while each performer contributes a distinct style.

One of the project’s early releases was “Too Much,” which arrived on 11 September and features Mzukulu alongside hip-hop artist Blxckie. Mzukulu, identified in the original announcement as the SAMA Best Male Artist of the Year, brings his soulful delivery to the track, while Blxckie adds his recognisable rap approach.

Traditional Maskandi guitar forms the song’s foundation, complemented by Spanish guitar touches and saxophone. The result introduces the compilation’s wider ambition: to bring different musical traditions together without losing what makes each one distinctive.

Sjava, Saliwa and Khanyie Bridge Musical Cultures

Another standout collaboration is “Umgangela,” which unites Sjava and Saliwa with rising Giyani artist Khanyie. The song explores themes of friendship, loyalty, love and cultural identity through a lively Maskandi-led performance.

Khanyie adds the rhythms of Xigaza, the Xitsonga disco sound, expanding the track beyond a single regional or musical tradition. The collaboration creates a connection between Zulu musical heritage and contemporary sounds from Limpopo, highlighting the creative possibilities that emerge when artists draw from different cultural backgrounds.

Jaiva Zimnike and Jesse Clegg Explore Grief on “Pain”

The compilation also makes room for a more reflective moment with “Pain,” featuring Jaiva Zimnike and Jesse Clegg. Centred on loss and remembrance, the song examines the emotional impact of losing someone close.

Zimnike brings the direct, heartfelt storytelling associated with Maskandi, expressing the emptiness left behind by a loved one’s death. Clegg’s vocals add a reflective layer to the collaboration, helping shape a song that speaks to grief as a deeply personal experience with universal resonance.

A Fresh Chapter for South African Collaboration

With Digital Maskandi Vol. 1, Durban Media House and Africori Music Group bring together artists whose musical backgrounds offer different perspectives on South African identity. From the rap-meets-Maskandi approach of “Too Much” to the cultural fusion of “Umgangela” and the emotional depth of “Pain,” the compilation explores several ways traditional music can evolve through collaboration.

The project positions Maskandi not simply as a sound rooted in the past, but as a living genre capable of engaging with hip-hop and other contemporary styles. By placing established performers and rising talent in the same creative space, Digital Maskandi Vol. 1 offers a fresh perspective on the possibilities of South African music.
