Kabelo Mabalane explains how his For King & Country album title reflects his Christian faith, his belief in Jesus Christ and his hopes for South Africa.

Kabelo Mabalane says his album title, For King & Country, reflects his Christian faith, his belief in Jesus Christ and his desire to use his talents to contribute to a better South Africa.

South African musician Kabelo Mabalane has shared the personal story behind the title of his album For King & Country, explaining how an interest in royal history eventually connected with his faith and hopes for the country.

In a conversation featured on Too Much Info, Mabalane revealed that the phrase initially caught his attention through historical films depicting monarchies, soldiers and wartime loyalty. Over time, however, it developed into something much more personal, becoming a reflection of his relationship with Jesus Christ and his commitment to South Africa.

For the musician, the title brings together two important parts of his identity: his devotion to his faith and his desire to see his country prosper.

How historical films inspired the album title

Mabalane explained that he has long been fascinated by the world of kings, queens and monarchies. Watching films about English history introduced him to the expression “For King and Country”, often associated with soldiers declaring their loyalty to their monarch and homeland.

The phrase remained with him, even before he connected it to his own beliefs and experiences.

“I watch a lot of movies. I’m a, I guess you can call me a royalist, you know, a fan of that whole monarchy situation and how it works with kings and queens and all of that stuff,” he explained.

What began as an interest in historical traditions eventually took on a new significance as his personal faith developed.

Why Jesus Christ is central to the title

Mabalane said the phrase now carries a spiritual meaning for him. Rather than referring to a traditional monarch, the “King” in the album title represents Jesus Christ, whom he recognises as his Lord and Saviour.

South Africa, meanwhile, represents the country he hopes to see grow and improve.

“Fast forward to now, where I do have a king and His name is Jesus. I do live in a country which is South Africa,” he said.

This understanding gives the album title a meaning that goes beyond its historical origins. It expresses Mabalane’s desire to honour his faith while remaining committed to the future of his homeland.

Kabelo believes faith can help transform South Africa

The musician also spoke about his conviction that Christianity can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives and, in turn, contribute to broader change in society.

Acknowledging that others may have different views on how South Africa’s challenges should be addressed, Mabalane said his perspective comes from his own personal experience.

“I happen to believe that the answer is Jesus, you know, for all the problems in our country. People beg to differ, but that’s another story for another day. I know what He’s done for me,” he explained.

He went on to suggest that the positive changes he attributes to his faith could reach far beyond his own life if experienced by others across the country.

“If you multiply me out by 60 million, you can pretty much change the world. If He can do it for me, He can do it for you,” Mabalane added.

His comments underline the personal nature of the album’s message: he believes individual transformation can contribute to a wider impact on communities and the nation.

Using his talents for a greater purpose

For Mabalane, For King & Country is ultimately about more than a memorable phrase or a reference to historical films. It represents his intention to use his abilities in a way that reflects his Christian beliefs and benefits South Africa.

“The album title For King & Country is really doing it to glorify my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, but also to use my talents, my gifts to advance everything good in this country,” he said.

The explanation offers insight into the thinking behind the project and the values that guide the musician’s creative journey.

By connecting faith, purpose and patriotism, Mabalane has given For King & Country a meaning rooted in his personal convictions and his hopes for the country.
