Wales head coach Steve Tandy has made a statement of intent ahead of Saturday’s grueling Nations Championship clash against world champions South Africa at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.
In a bid to bring raw physicality and fresh energy to Durban, Tandy has rung the changes, naming six new faces to the starting XV that suffered a 35-21 defeat to Argentina.
The Tactical Shake-Up
To counter the formidable Springbok defensive line, Wales field a brand-new center partnership, with Max Llewellyn and Ben Thomas stepping in for Eddie James and Joe Hawkins.
The backline also gets a major injection of speed and tactical nuance:
- Rees-Zammit Returns: Superstar winger Louis Rees-Zammit returns to reclaim the number 14 jersey on the right wing.
- New Playmaker: Dan Edwards takes over the flyhalf duties from Sam Costelow.

“We are going up against probably the most physical team in the world,” Tandy warned. “Some boys deserve an opportunity and it is a chance to freshen up the team… For us, it is about putting our game out there. We want to see a real physical edge.”

Wales have notoriously struggled on South African soil, winning just once in 13 attempts—a nail-biting 13-12 victory in Bloemfontein four years ago. Their last meeting with the Springboks in November ended in a humiliating 73-0 defeat in Cardiff, a memory the visitors are desperate to banish.
Meanwhile, the Springboks enter the Test with maximum momentum. Having secured back-to-back bonus-point wins over England and Scotland, Rassie Erasmus’s side leads the table with 10 points.
