Former Miss South Africa, model and mental health advocate Shudufhadzo Musida is celebrating Women’s Month in style after being chosen as the cover star of Manor Africa’s Women’s Day issue.

The feature shines a spotlight on women who are challenging traditional expectations, creating their own identities and using their platforms to inspire change.

For Musida, however, the cover represents more than a fashion moment. It gave her an opportunity to reflect on the women who paved the way before her — and the responsibility that comes with having the freedom to choose her own path.

Shudufhadzo Reflects on Women’s Day

Taking to social media, Musida shared a heartfelt message about what the cover means to her.

She reflected on the sacrifices made by previous generations of women and acknowledged the communities and individuals who helped create opportunities for those who came after them.

Her message centred on freedom, responsibility, service and sisterhood, emphasising that personal success should also create opportunities for others.

Musida encouraged women to embrace their individual journeys while remembering that progress is rarely achieved alone.

Manor Africa Celebrates a Woman Breaking the Mould

Manor Africa said Musida was a natural choice for its Women’s Month cover because of her determination to challenge conventional ideas about identity and leadership.

The publication highlighted her work as a UN Global Champion for Mental Health and her continued efforts to define leadership on her own terms.

Her journey from beauty queen to mental health advocate and public figure has allowed her to build a platform that extends well beyond pageantry.

From Graduate to Miss South Africa

During her interview with Manor, Musida also opened up about what motivated her to enter the Miss South Africa competition.

She spoke candidly about the difficulty many young South Africans face when trying to access meaningful career opportunities.

Despite graduating with a triple major, she said she struggled to find employment — an experience that highlighted for her the importance of visibility and access to opportunity.

For Musida, education alone is not always enough when people lack access to the networks and opportunities needed to turn qualifications into careers.

Pageantry as a Platform for Change

Musida also challenged the perception that beauty pageants lack intellectual depth.

Rather than viewing pageantry purely as a competition based on appearance, she sees it as a platform where important issues such as power, representation and agency can be explored.

Her experience ultimately helped her expand her understanding of leadership and use the visibility that came with the Miss South Africa title to advocate for issues close to her heart.

A Message of Collective Progress

Musida’s Manor Africa cover comes at a time when conversations around women’s empowerment, identity and opportunity remain important.

Her message is ultimately about rising together — recognising the women and communities who opened doors before us while creating new pathways for those who will follow.

“We are not rising alone.”
