Orlando Pirates produced a dominant second-half display to beat Chippa United 3-0 at Kings Park Stadium on Sunday, August 16, 2026, collecting three valuable Betway Premiership points and moving back to the top of the table.
The Buccaneers were held to a goalless draw in the opening 45 minutes, but they came out after the break with far greater attacking purpose. Three goals in the space of 28 minutes ultimately settled the contest.
Pirates turn up the pressure after the break
The first half offered little in the way of goals, with both sides struggling to find the decisive final pass.
Pirates, however, controlled more of the ball and created the better attacking numbers. They finished the game with 61% possession, 14 shots and an xG of 1.63, compared with Chippa’s 39% possession, eight shots and 0.84 xG.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 60th minute.
Lungu breaks the deadlock
New signing Gamphani Lungu produced the moment Pirates had been waiting for. The Zambian forward collected the ball around the edge of the penalty area, turned away from his marker and fired a powerful effort beyond Stanley Nwabali.
Patrick Maswanganyi was credited with the assist as Pirates moved 1-0 ahead.
The goal completely changed the momentum of the match.
Seema doubles the advantage
Just four minutes later, Pirates doubled their lead.
A dangerous corner was delivered into the Chippa penalty area and Lebone Seema rose highest to head the ball home.
It was a particularly significant goal for the defender, who was named Defender of the Season last campaign. The goal was also his first of the current season.
With a 2-0 advantage, Pirates were now firmly in control.
Msendami completes the rout
Chippa struggled to find a response as Pirates continued to threaten in transition.
Daniel Msendami came off the bench in the 78th minute and needed only nine minutes to make his mark. The forward struck in the 87th minute to complete the 3-0 victory.
It was an important personal milestone for Msendami, marking his first goal for Orlando Pirates since joining the club in January.
Pirates back on top
The victory takes Orlando Pirates to seven points from their opening three league matches, while also restoring momentum after their previous league draw. The defending champions moved back to the summit of the Betway Premiership standings.
The result also extended Pirates’ impressive recent record against Chippa. According to FotMob, the Buccaneers have now gone eight matches unbeaten against Chippa, winning seven of those meetings.
For Chippa, it was another frustrating afternoon after a promising start to the campaign. The home side remained without a win in the league and were ultimately undone by Pirates’ quality and efficiency after
