Pitso Mosimane’s second spell as Bafana Bafana head coach is set to begin with a demanding run of international fixtures after SAFA officially confirmed a friendly against Egypt in October.
South Africa will face the Pharaohs at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, 4 October 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 South African time.
The fixture will give Mosimane a high-profile test on familiar territory as he begins his latest chapter in charge of the national team.
However, the Egypt clash will come at the end of an extremely busy period for Bafana Bafana, who are scheduled to play three matches between 26 September and 4 October.
Mosimane’s first competitive assignment will come on 26 September, when South Africa host Guinea in an AFCON 2027 qualifier.
Just four days later, Bafana will travel to face Eritrea on 30 September, before heading to Cairo for the friendly against Egypt.
That means Mosimane will have little time to settle into his return before being thrown into a demanding sequence of matches that could test both his squad depth and tactical plans.
The Egypt fixture is particularly intriguing given Mosimane’s previous experience in the country. The South African coach enjoyed a successful spell with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he won major honours and established himself as one of the continent’s leading coaches.
Now he returns to Cairo in the Bafana Bafana dugout, with Egypt providing a stern test for a team preparing for an important AFCON qualifying campaign.
South Africa and Egypt are also familiar opponents on the continental stage, having shared a group at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
For Bafana Bafana, the October friendly could therefore provide Mosimane with an opportunity to assess his players against one of Africa’s strongest football nations.
The immediate priority, however, remains the AFCON qualifiers.
Bafana must first navigate the Guinea and Eritrea matches before turning their attention to Egypt, meaning Mosimane will need to manage his squad carefully across a hectic international window.
His return to the national team was always going to attract significant attention, but the schedule ensures that the 62-year-old coach will have little time to ease back into the role.
