Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster has officially made the move to the United States, joining Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo FC on loan from Burnley until June 2027.
The 25-year-old forward brings valuable Premier League and international experience to Houston after spending four seasons with Burnley.
Foster made 89 league appearances for the English club across the Premier League and EFL Championship, scoring 11 goals.
Foster leaves Burnley with promotion pedigree
Foster played an important role in Burnley’s successful campaigns in the Championship.
He was part of the squad that won the 2022/23 EFL Championship title, before helping the Clarets secure another automatic promotion with a second-place finish in the 2024/25 Championship season.
His most recent Premier League campaign saw Foster score three goals and provide two assists in 26 appearances.
Among his notable moments were goals against Manchester United at Old Trafford and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as a dramatic 95th-minute winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Houston Dynamo have option to make Foster’s move permanent
Foster’s move to Houston is initially a loan deal, but the MLS club has secured a $7 million purchase option, worth approximately R112 million.
Houston Dynamo president of soccer Pat Onstad believes the South African’s physical qualities, movement and work rate will give the club another attacking weapon.
“Lyle presents another powerful, mobile forward to our attacking group,” Onstad said.
The Houston chief also highlighted Foster’s ability to run in behind defences, link up with teammates and contribute defensively, while pointing to his Premier League and international experience as major assets.
From Orlando Pirates to the Premier League and MLS
Foster’s journey to MLS is another major chapter in a career that began at Orlando Pirates.
The striker came through the Buccaneers’ academy before moving to Europe in January 2019, when he joined AS Monaco.
He subsequently spent time with Cercle Brugge in Belgium and Vitória S.C. in Portugal before establishing himself at K.V.C. Westerlo.
Foster scored 12 goals in 44 league appearances for Westerlo and helped the club win the Belgian second-division title and earn promotion before making the step up to the Belgian Pro League.
Burnley eventually signed the South African in January 2023.
Foster arrives in Houston as a Bafana Bafana international
The move also gives Houston Dynamo an established South African international.
Foster has earned 33 senior caps and scored 11 goals for Bafana Bafana since making his international debut in 2018.
He was included in South Africa’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and also scored twice during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 16.
Foster was also influential during World Cup qualifying, scoring in victories over Benin and Lesotho as South Africa secured qualification for the tournament.
Now, with his next chapter taking him across the Atlantic, Foster will look to make his mark in MLS — while Houston Dynamo have the option to turn the loan into a permanent move worth around R112 million.
