Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly turned to former Orlando Pirates defender Deano Van Rooyen as they look to solve an unexpected right-back shortage.
The Brazilians have been hit by injuries to Khuliso Mudau and Zuko Mdunyelwa, leaving Thapelo Morena as their only available recognised right-back.
That situation has reportedly prompted Sundowns to explore the free-agent market, with Soccer Beat reporting that the Tshwane giants have identified Van Rooyen as a potential solution.
Van Rooyen available after Pirates exit
The 29-year-old is currently a free agent after reaching a mutual agreement with Orlando Pirates to leave the club in August 2026.
That availability could make Van Rooyen an attractive option for Sundowns, particularly given his experience in the Premier Soccer League.
Known as “Die Hond” because of his tireless work rate and never-say-die approach, Van Rooyen has built a reputation as one of the country’s dependable right-backs.
From Stellenbosch leader to Pirates regular
Van Rooyen began his professional journey at Stellenbosch FC, joining the club as a teenager alongside his cousin and fellow footballer Ashley Du Preez.
He made his senior debut in 2016 against Mthatha Bucks in the National First Division and gradually developed into one of Stellenbosch’s most influential players.
He played an important role in the club’s promotion to the Premiership in 2019 and ultimately became Stellenbosch FC’s all-time appearance record holder, making more than 160 appearances across competitions.
His time in the Cape Winelands also brought silverware, with Van Rooyen co-captaining Stellenbosch to victory in the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup.
Pirates chapter ended after 51 appearances
In August 2024, Van Rooyen made the high-profile move to Orlando Pirates, fulfilling a long-held ambition of playing for one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
He went on to make 51 appearances for the Buccaneers and was part of a squad that lifted major domestic silverware, including the MTN8.
His performances at club level also earned him a first call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad in 2025.
However, with regular playing opportunities becoming a concern, Van Rooyen and Pirates eventually agreed to part ways in August 2026.
Could Sundowns be his next destination?
Sundowns’ current shortage at right-back could now open the door to another major chapter in Van Rooyen’s career.
A move to Chloorkop would give the defender an opportunity to remain at the highest level of South African football while providing Sundowns with an experienced option during a difficult injury spell.
For now, the reported move is still developing, but Van Rooyen’s free-agent status and extensive PSL experience could make him a logical target for the Brazilians.
