Orlando Pirates have confirmed the departure of defender Deano van Rooyen after the player and club agreed to end their relationship by mutual consent.
The 27-year-old right-back leaves the Buccaneers after more than 51 appearances for the Soweto giants, bringing an end to a spell that began when he joined from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Pirates and Van Rooyen agree to part ways
Pirates confirmed that the decision followed discussions between the club and the player, with both parties agreeing that it was the appropriate time for Van Rooyen to begin a new chapter.
The defender was not always an automatic starter, but he remained a reliable option for the technical team whenever called upon.
His versatility and professional attitude allowed him to contribute whether selected from the start or introduced from the bench.
A dependable spell at Orlando Pirates
Van Rooyen arrived at Pirates after establishing himself as one of the more consistent full-backs in the Betway Premiership with Stellenbosch FC.
His move to Soweto represented an important step in his career, and he went on to make more than 51 appearances for the Buccaneers.
Although competition for places was intense, Van Rooyen continued to provide depth and experience in the Pirates defence.
His departure now creates another squad-management issue for the club as the Buccaneers negotiate a demanding season across multiple competitions.
Pirates thank Van Rooyen for his service
Orlando Pirates have thanked the defender for his contribution and wished him well for the next stage of his career.
For Van Rooyen, the focus will now shift towards finding his next club and another opportunity to establish himself as a regular first-team defender.
His exit also adds another storyline to an already busy period for the Buccaneers, who continue to reshape their squad.
After 51-plus appearances in the famous black-and-white shirt, Van Rooyen’s Pirates chapter has officially come to an end.
