Mamelodi Sundowns youngster Thato Sibiya is on his way to France as he closes in on a move to French Ligue 1 side Lille OSC.
The 20-year-old left-back has travelled from South Africa to Lille, where he is expected to complete his medical before finalising a season-long loan deal.
The move represents a major opportunity for the highly rated defender to gain valuable experience in European football and potentially secure a permanent transfer.
Sibiya on his way to Lille
Sibiya was spotted at OR Tambo International Airport alongside representatives from his agency, Jozi Talent Management, as he prepared to travel to France.
His next step will be to undergo the required medical examinations before signing the paperwork that will officially complete his loan move.
Importantly, the agreement is understood to include an option for Lille to make the transfer permanent at the end of the loan spell.
That gives Sibiya an opportunity to impress in France and potentially turn a temporary move into a long-term European adventure.
From Sundowns’ development ranks to Europe
Sibiya’s rise has been rapid.
The left-back was promoted to the Sundowns first team in January 2026 after catching the eye with his performances for the club’s DStv Diski Challenge side.
Although opportunities with the senior team have been limited, his progress at youth level appears to have attracted attention from Lille.
Sibiya leaves South Africa having not featured for Sundowns during the current campaign, making regular first-team football in France an important objective.
The move could provide him with the consistent playing time needed to develop physically and tactically while adapting to a different football environment.
Sibiya already has international experience
The young defender is also no stranger to international football.
Sibiya has represented South Africa at junior level and featured for the Amajita U20 side, including appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.
He has also represented the country at U17 level, giving him experience of international competition from a young age.
Sibiya’s Sundowns record
Despite being regarded as a promising prospect, Sibiya made only four senior appearances for Sundowns, including two outings in the CAF Champions League.
At youth international level, he has earned five U17 caps and scored once, while also collecting nine appearances for the U20 side.
Now, France presents the next challenge.
For Sibiya, the immediate priority will be to settle into Lille, earn the trust of the coaching staff and compete for regular minutes.
If he can make the most of the opportunity, the loan could become an important stepping stone in his development — and potentially open the door to a permanent move to Europe.
