Becoming the artist he is today did not only require Nasty C to gain experience — it also meant letting go of the habits, doubts and mental barriers that once held him back.
The South African rapper has opened up about the personal sacrifices behind his evolution, revealing that his growth has involved learning to stop limiting himself and finding healthier ways to deal with self-doubt.
Discussing his new album, T’s & C’s Apply, Nasty C suggested that the project captures part of the new direction fans have been hearing from him through his recent music, streams and social media activity.
But beyond the music, the conversation offered a glimpse into the personal changes behind his artistic evolution.
Nasty C had to let go of self-doubt
Asked what he had to lose to become the version of himself fans know today, particularly while navigating independence and building his career on his own terms, Nasty C pointed to an internal battle rather than a material sacrifice.
“I lost a lot of bad stuff, like holding myself back, a little bit of the doubts, constant self, limiting myself,” he explained.
For the rapper, growth has meant shedding the mindset that prevented him from fully embracing his potential.
It has not been a one-time transformation either. Nasty C acknowledged that self-doubt can still creep in, but he has learned how to recognise it and find ways to move beyond it.
Sometimes the sacrifice is stepping away
Interestingly, Nasty C does not always deal with creative pressure by working harder.
Instead, one of his ways of resetting is to temporarily step away from music altogether.
“What usually works for me is, like, to do something totally outside of what I do for a living. I might go read a book. I might go play a game somewhere, do something random,” he said.
Taking a break from his usual environment allows him to reset mentally and return with a different perspective.
For an artist whose career is built around constant creativity, knowing when to disconnect can be just as important as knowing when to create.
Communication is another lesson
Nasty C also opened up about a principle that extends beyond his music career: communication.
When asked about an important lesson he lives by, the rapper highlighted the importance of peace and having clear lines of communication in both personal and professional relationships.
For him, healthy relationships also require enough honesty for people to challenge each other when necessary.
“If you’re not living up to your potential, I should be able to tell you, you know, step it up a bit, without you being offended,” he said.
That approach reflects an increasing focus on accountability, honesty and personal development.
The real price of Nasty C’s evolution
Nasty C’s reflections suggest that the biggest sacrifices behind his growth were not necessarily things he physically had to give up.
They were internal.
He had to work on letting go of self-doubt, stop holding himself back and become more comfortable stepping outside his familiar environment.
His journey also highlights the reality that personal growth does not mean completely eliminating doubt or uncertainty. Instead, it can mean learning how to manage those feelings without allowing them to dictate your direction.
