Kaizer Chiefs may need to make a bold decision in goalkeeping after another costly mistake from captain Brandon Petersen raised fresh questions about his place in the starting XI.
Petersen was at the centre of controversy during Chiefs’ 2-2 draw against Richards Bay, with the goalkeeper’s error contributing to Nqaba Xulu’s opening goal.
It was reportedly the third costly mistake involving Petersen this season, prompting debate over whether head coach Fernando da Cruz should hand an opportunity to new signing Renaldo Leaner.
Should Kaizer Chiefs make a goalkeeping change?
Petersen remains an experienced goalkeeper and was one of Chiefs’ standout performers last season. However, his recent errors have come at a cost, with the Amakhosi failing to win the three matches in which he made significant mistakes.
That could give Da Cruz a difficult decision to make.
The arrival of Leaner provides Chiefs with another option between the posts. The Bafana Bafana international was signed to strengthen competition in the goalkeeping department and could now be given an opportunity to prove himself.
Rather than permanently dropping Petersen, Da Cruz could temporarily rotate his goalkeepers and allow the captain time to regain confidence and form.
Leaner deserves an opportunity
Bruce Bvuma is also competing for the No. 1 position, but the argument can be made that Leaner should now get a chance.
Competition for places is healthy at a club of Chiefs’ stature, and no player should be guaranteed a starting position when performances begin to dip.
Giving Leaner a run in the team could also send a strong message to the squad: places must be earned through performances.
At the same time, replacing Petersen does not necessarily mean the end of his Chiefs career. A short spell on the bench could allow the experienced goalkeeper to reset, work on his confidence and return stronger.
A big call for Fernando da Cruz
Da Cruz now faces an important selection decision.
Does he continue backing his captain and hope Petersen rediscovers his best form, or does he give Leaner an opportunity to stake his claim?
With the season still in its early stages, there is arguably no better time to test the competition for the No. 1 jersey.
