Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane could be set to add another familiar name to his technical team, with AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane reportedly emerging as the leading candidate for the vacant second assistant coach position.
According to a report by iDiski Times journalist Sinethemba Makonco, Zwane is now among the frontrunners for a role that would see him join Mosimane’s growing backroom staff.
The potential appointment would represent another major step in Zwane’s coaching career and a return to the national-team environment.
Bafana’s technical team taking shape
Mosimane has wasted little time putting together his technical structure since taking charge of Bafana Bafana.
Musi Matlaba and Kabelo Rangoaga are already part of the setup, with the pair bringing expertise in areas including match analysis, data, player tracking, conditioning and fitness.
Mosimane has also added Morena Ramoreboli to his staff.
Ramoreboli recently left his position as Botswana head coach to return to the Bafana environment, where he will serve as an assistant to Mosimane.
His experience across Southern African football is expected to add another dimension to the technical team as South Africa prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The reported arrival of Zwane would further strengthen the coaching department and potentially complete Mosimane’s core group of assistants.
Why Arthur Zwane could be a good fit
Zwane brings considerable experience of South African football to the table.
The former Kaizer Chiefs star moved into coaching after ending his playing career in 2010 and initially joined the Amakhosi technical team as an assistant.
He subsequently spent several years working within the club’s academy, coaching teams across the U15, U17 and U19 age groups before taking charge of the reserve side.
That development work eventually earned Zwane a return to the senior team, where he worked under coaches including Gavin Hunt, Stuart Baxter and Molefi Ntseki.
He also had an opportunity to lead Chiefs on an interim basis during the 2020/21 campaign, helping the club reach the CAF Champions League final.
From Chiefs to AmaZulu
Zwane was appointed Kaizer Chiefs’ permanent head coach in May 2022 on a three-year contract.
However, his time in charge of the senior side was cut short following a difficult 2022/23 season, after which he returned to an assistant role before eventually moving away from the club’s setup.
In October 2024, Zwane began a new chapter by joining AmaZulu as co-coach alongside Vusumuzi Vilakazi.
Following Vilakazi’s departure, Zwane took sole charge of Usuthu.
He subsequently helped AmaZulu regain stability and guided the Durban club to sixth place in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership, a result that secured MTN8 qualification.
His work also earned him a contract extension.
Could Zwane join Mosimane?
If the reports prove accurate, Zwane would bring a combination of academy development experience, PSL knowledge and senior coaching experience to the Bafana setup.
His understanding of local players and the domestic game could also complement Mosimane’s extensive international experience.
For Zwane, meanwhile, the opportunity would represent another significant chapter in his coaching journey.
Nothing has been officially confirmed yet, but with Bafana’s technical team taking shape, Arthur Zwane’s potential appointment is certainly one to watch.
