Orlando Pirates delivered a commanding performance to book their place in the Carling Knockout Cup quarterfinals, cruising to a convincing 3-0 victory over Milford FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Tuesday night.
A brilliant brace from Tshepang Moremi and a clinical finish from Thapelo Mokobodi ensured the Buccaneers progressed to the last eight in style, giving head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side a timely confidence boost ahead of the much-anticipated Soweto Derby.
Moremi and Mokobodi Lead Pirates to Victory
Orlando Pirates made their intentions clear from the opening stages, putting Milford FC under pressure with energetic attacking play.
The home side broke the deadlock in the 15th minute when Tshepang Moremi set up Thapelo Mokobodi, who calmly guided a low shot beyond goalkeeper Siphamandla Hleza and into the bottom corner.
The Buccaneers continued to push forward and doubled their advantage in the 34th minute. Moremi timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap, raced past the Milford defence and produced a composed finish from a tight angle.
Moremi was not finished yet. Just before half-time, the Pirates attacker completed his brace after connecting with an excellent defence-splitting pass from Mpho Padime. He rounded the goalkeeper before slotting home to give the hosts a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.
Pirates Control the Second Half
With a comfortable advantage established, Orlando Pirates managed the second half with confidence and composure.
The Buccaneers controlled possession, dictated the tempo and kept Milford FC from mounting a serious comeback. Although the visitors continued to battle, they struggled to penetrate a well-organised Pirates defence.
The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive victory for the Soweto giants, who advanced to the Carling Knockout quarterfinals without conceding a goal.
The result also provides valuable momentum for Ouaddou’s men as they prepare for one of the biggest fixtures on the South African football calendar.
