Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane is taking a different approach to leadership within the national team, with plans to build a wider group of players capable of wearing the captain’s armband.
While Ronwen Williams remains a key figure in the leadership structure, Mosimane has revealed that Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine and veteran midfielder Themba Zwane will also be given captaincy responsibilities.
The coach explained that he does not want Bafana to depend on just one permanent captain. Instead, he intends to rotate the armband when necessary and give younger players an opportunity to develop their leadership skills.
“I believe in leadership in many ways. So we won’t have one captain. We have a few captains, and I will choose sometimes a captain of the day,” Mosimane said.
Mosimane believes leadership should not simply be determined by age or seniority. His plan is to identify players who can contribute to the team both on and off the pitch.
Zwane, an experienced member of the squad, is already part of that leadership group, while Chaine has been identified as one of the younger players who can grow into the role.
“Chaine is going to be one of the captains, the same as Ronwen. He will remain my captain. Let’s go for it, let’s open this thing,” Mosimane said.
The coach also pointed to the practical benefits of having several leaders. Injuries, suspensions or changes in the starting lineup can leave a traditional captain unavailable, making a broader leadership group useful.
Mosimane’s approach therefore goes beyond simply choosing who wears the armband. It is also aimed at preparing the next generation of Bafana Bafana leaders.
With Williams, Zwane and Chaine among those entrusted with greater responsibility, the coming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers could provide an early test of Mosimane’s new leadership structure.
