Kaizer Chiefs could make more squad changes in January, with Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Paseka Mako and Nkhanyisa Shinga facing uncertain futures at Naturena.

Kaizer Chiefs could face another important squad reshuffle when the January transfer window opens, with several players needing to convince Fernando Da Cruz that they still have a role to play.

Amakhosi have already been active in rebuilding their squad, bringing in five new players during the current transfer window, including the permanent signing of Khanyisa Mayo.

However, the early-season results have highlighted areas that may still require attention.

Chiefs have struggled for consistency in recent weeks, with four draws and just one victory in their last five matches leaving them further behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

That could prompt another round of decisions in January.

1. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo is one of the players whose future could come under scrutiny.

The midfielder has found it difficult to establish himself as a consistent starter in recent seasons, while speculation over a possible departure surfaced before the previous transfer window closed.

He remained at Naturena, but his situation could change if he cannot force his way into Da Cruz’s plans.

Ngcobo’s contract situation could also become significant, with his current deal reportedly approaching its final months. Chiefs may therefore have to weigh up whether to retain him, negotiate a new contract or consider a January move.

For the midfielder, the period leading up to January could be crucial.

2. Paseka Mako

Paseka Mako’s situation is somewhat different.

The former Orlando Pirates defender joined Chiefs but has struggled to build momentum because of fitness issues.

His experience could still make him valuable, particularly with Chiefs needing depth at left-back. However, another prolonged spell on the sidelines could complicate his position within the squad.

If Mako returns to full fitness and performs consistently, he could strengthen his case to stay.

Should injury problems persist, however, Chiefs may have to consider whether a change is necessary.

3. Nkhanyisa Shinga

Nkhanyisa Shinga has had limited opportunity to make an impression since arriving at Chiefs.

The left-back has made only one official appearance for the club before an injury interrupted his progress, leaving him with plenty of ground to make up once he returns.

Da Cruz’s squad rebuild means competition for places is unlikely to become easier.

Shinga therefore needs a strong run of fitness and performances if he is to establish himself as part of Chiefs’ longer-term plans.

His contract situation could also influence the club’s decision-making as January approaches.

What could Chiefs change in January?

If any of the three players depart, Chiefs will need to consider how best to replace them.

Ngcobo’s departure would potentially leave Da Cruz looking for another midfield option, particularly if the coach wants greater competition and consistency in the middle of the park.

Mako or Shinga leaving would make left-back another position requiring attention. Chiefs could opt for an experienced defender, promote from within or target a younger player capable of competing for the position.

The club’s recruitment strategy could ultimately depend on which players are moved on and how the squad performs over the next few months.

January could bring another Chiefs reshuffle

Nothing is guaranteed for the three players at this stage, but all have reasons to make the coming months count.

Chiefs have already demonstrated that they are prepared to make significant changes to the squad.

If Da Cruz decides further adjustments are needed, January could provide another opportunity to reshape Amakhosi and address the areas where the team has struggled for consistency.

Who should Chiefs target if Ngcobo, Mako or Shinga leave?
