Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will battle for the first major piece of silverware of the season when they meet in the MTN8 final on Saturday.
The two South African heavyweights will renew their rivalry at Moses Mabhida Stadium, with Pirates looking to retain their MTN8 crown and Sundowns determined to claim the trophy for themselves.
Pirates vs Sundowns: When is the MTN8 final?
The MTN8 final is scheduled for Saturday, 10 October 2026, at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Kickoff is set for 18:00, with the match scheduled to be broadcast live on DStv channel 202.
With both clubs among the country’s leading sides, another closely contested encounter is expected as they fight for early-season honours.
Pirates chasing more MTN8 history
Orlando Pirates have established themselves as the dominant force in the MTN8 in recent seasons.
The Buccaneers have won the competition four times in a row, claiming five of the last six editions. They will now attempt to extend that remarkable run by successfully defending their crown against Sundowns.
Pirates also head into the final on an impressive 25-match unbeaten run across all competitions, stretching back to last season.
Their most recent defeats came against Casric Stars on penalties in the Nedbank Cup and Sundowns, who recorded a 2-1 victory over them in the Betway Premiership in February.
Appollis adds another attacking threat
One player likely to attract plenty of attention is Oswin Appollis, who has enjoyed an encouraging run of form for both club and country.
The Pirates attacker recently starred for Bafana Bafana in their 5-0 victory over Eritrea, providing three assists. It was the second time he had recorded three assists for the national team, having previously achieved the feat against Congo in 2024.
Appollis has also made an impact domestically, registering two goals and two assists in seven Betway Premiership appearances this season.
His creativity and ability to operate in dangerous areas could prove important for Pirates in the final.
Foster’s Bafana situation adds another talking point
Former Pirates striker Lyle Foster is another name connected to the Buccaneers, although his current focus is far removed from the MTN8 final.
The 26-year-old forward is currently outside the Bafana Bafana picture after a difficult period that included Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League last season.
Foster subsequently moved to Houston Dynamo in Major League Soccer on loan, following a career that has also taken him to Monaco, Belgium and Portugal before his spell in England.
For now, however, the spotlight belongs to Pirates and Sundowns as the two giants prepare for another high-stakes showdown.
