Rulani Mokwena has won all eight of his official matches at Pyramids FC, with the Egyptian giants flying high domestically and in Africa.

Rulani Mokwena is making an early statement in Egypt, with the South African coach enjoying a remarkable start to life at Pyramids FC.

Mokwena’s latest success came on Wednesday night when Pyramids defeated Al Qanah 3-2 in the Egypt League Cup, extending the coach’s perfect record since taking charge.

The 39-year-old has now overseen eight wins from eight official matches since arriving in Cairo in July.

During that impressive run, Pyramids have scored 19 goals, kept five clean sheets and conceded just four times.

Mokwena dominating the Egyptian Premier League

Mokwena’s influence has also been felt in the Egyptian Premier League, where Pyramids have made a perfect start.

The club currently sit at the top of the standings ahead of heavyweights Al Ahly and Zamalek, collecting 15 points from 15.

Pyramids opened their league campaign with a commanding 3-0 away victory over Ghazl El Mahalla before following it up with a 2-0 win against Abou Qir Fertilizers.

They then secured a narrow 1-0 victory away to Al Masry before beating El Gouna 1-0 at home.

Their fifth league victory came against Eastern Enppi, with Pyramids winning 2-1 away from home.

Mokwena’s excellent start was recognised when he was named EPFA Coach of the Month for August 2026.

Pyramids making their mark in Africa

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has also overseen an impressive start to Pyramids’ continental campaign.

The Egyptian side produced a dominant performance in the CAF Champions League against Kenyan club Gor Mahia.

Pyramids won the first leg 2-0 away from home before completing a convincing 5-1 victory in the return fixture.

That gave them a commanding 7-1 aggregate win and secured their progress in the competition.

With Pyramids competing strongly both domestically and in Africa, Mokwena has quickly established himself as one of the coaches to watch on the continent.

South African reunion could await

Mokwena’s CAF Champions League journey could also produce an intriguing storyline for South African football fans.

As Pyramids progress, they could potentially encounter Mamelodi Sundowns or Orlando Pirates, setting up a possible reunion between Mokwena and South African opposition.

Mokwena previously coached Sundowns and enjoyed significant success with the club before moving abroad.

For now, however, his immediate focus is keeping Pyramids’ remarkable momentum going.

Busy October ahead

Pyramids return to Egyptian Premier League action on 12 October, when they host Ceramica Cleopatra.

Their attention will then shift back to the CAF Champions League, with a two-legged second qualifying-round tie against El Merreikh FC Bentiu of South Sudan.

The first leg is scheduled for 16 or 17 October, followed by the return fixture in Egypt on 24 October.

Pyramids will also travel to face Tala’ea El Gaish on 20 October before hosting Wadi Degla on 29 October.

With a perfect record already secured, Mokwena now faces a demanding run of fixtures that could define Pyramids’ ambitions for the season.

The big question is no longer whether Mokwena can make an impact in Egypt — it is how much silverware he can bring to Cairo.
