Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena is reportedly safe and unharmed after his vehicle was involved in a car crash in Vanderbijlpark, in the Vaal.
The incident happened last Sunday, with the South African football legend said to have lost control of his vehicle while approaching a roundabout.
According to Timespost, the car struck a wall at Trevasa Court near Hertz Boulevard, opposite Emfuleni Estate.
Mokoena Was Returning From SAFA Duties
Mokoena reportedly told The Sedibeng Ster that he was returning from work-related commitments with the South African Football Association (SAFA).
The former defender had spent the week attending the SAFA and FIFA Talent Development Scheme U15 Inter-Provincial Tournament at Marks Park in Johannesburg.
Although the crash reportedly left him shaken, Mokoena escaped without physical injuries and is said to be in good health.
A Bafana Bafana Legend
Mokoena remains one of South Africa’s most recognisable football figures, having enjoyed a distinguished international career with Bafana Bafana.
He made his national-team debut in 1999 at the age of 18, becoming the youngest player to represent South Africa at the time.
Nicknamed “Mbazo”, he went on to earn 105 caps for Bafana Bafana and scored one international goal before retiring from professional football in 2013.
Mokoena’s World Cup Legacy
Mokoena represented South Africa at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, as well as the 2010 tournament hosted on home soil.
As captain, he led Bafana Bafana in all three of their group-stage matches at the 2010 World Cup — a memorable chapter in his career and South African football history.
News of the crash will come as a relief to supporters, with the former captain reportedly escaping the incident without injury.
