Orlando Pirates have reached the CAF Champions League group stage after beating African Stars 4-0 in the second leg to secure a 5-0 aggregate victory.

Orlando Pirates have booked their place in the CAF Champions League group stage in emphatic fashion after a convincing 4-0 victory over African Stars at Orlando Amstel Arena.

The Buccaneers entered the second leg with a narrow 1-0 advantage from the away fixture, but there was little doubt about the outcome once the two sides met again.

Pirates produced a dominant attacking display to win the second leg 4-0 and progress 5-0 on aggregate, sending a strong message ahead of the group stage.

Pirates waste no time putting Stars under pressure

The Buccaneers came out aggressively and looked determined to finish the tie without giving African Stars any hope of a comeback.

Their pressure was rewarded in the 17th minute when Thapelo Mokobodi opened the scoring.

The goal followed a neat combination involving Thalente Mbatha and Simphiwe Masilela, with Pirates taking control of the contest.

Masilela was involved again shortly before half-time, setting up Evidence Makgopa, who doubled the home side’s advantage.

With African Stars now needing three goals simply to force their way back into the tie, Pirates were firmly in command.

Makgopa completes brace as Pirates run riot

There was no let-up from the Buccaneers after the interval.

Pirates continued to attack and eventually added a third goal when Makgopa turned provider, setting up Mpho Padime to score his first goal for the club.

Makgopa then put the result beyond any doubt with his second goal of the evening, completing an impressive individual performance and sealing Pirates’ 4-0 victory on the night.

The 5-0 aggregate triumph means Pirates can now look forward to the CAF Champions League group stage, where they will face a much tougher test against some of Africa’s leading clubs.

Pirates flying the flag for South Africa

The result will be particularly significant for South African football following Kaizer Chiefs’ elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup.

While Chiefs suffered a penalty-shootout defeat to Zambia’s Red Arrows, Pirates have ensured that South Africa will have representation in the Champions League group stage.

The Buccaneers will now turn their attention to the next phase of the competition, with their sights set firmly on progressing beyond the group stage.

For coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and his players, the message is clear: qualifying was the first objective, but the bigger challenge starts now.

Can Orlando Pirates go all the way and challenge for the CAF Champions League title?
