Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Hilton Jordaan expects fringe players could leave on loan in January following the club's CAF Champions League elimination.

Mamelodi Sundowns could make changes to their squad during the January transfer window following their disappointing exit from the CAF Champions League.

Former Sundowns defender Hilton Jordaan believes several players who have struggled for regular game time could be sent out on loan, although he does not expect the club to make wholesale changes to its squad.

The Brazilians suffered a major setback after failing to progress in Africa’s premier club competition, ending their hopes of defending the continental title they won last season.

With their Champions League campaign over, Sundowns must now concentrate on the remaining domestic competitions, including the Carling Knockout Cup, Betway Premiership and Nedbank Cup.

Speaking to KickOff, Jordaan suggested that the club could use the January window to manage its squad and create opportunities for players who need more regular football.

“I think there might be some players going out on loan in January, but I think they will keep the nucleus of that squad. They still got the Carling Knockout, there’s a league, and there is Nedbank Cup also,” Jordaan said.

Jordaan surprised by Sundowns’ continental elimination

Jordaan also admitted that he was surprised by Sundowns’ failure to progress in the CAF Champions League.

Having lifted the trophy last season, the Tshwane-based club entered the current campaign with expectations of another strong continental run.

However, their inability to overcome opposition from Angola brought their campaign to an unexpected end.

Jordaan described the result as a significant disappointment, particularly given the club’s status as defending champions and the expectations surrounding their title defence.

“It was a shock that they didn’t beat a side from Angola, and now they have to focus on the Carling Knockout. It is a blow for Sundowns because they won the Champions League last season, which made them the tournament’s favourites. So for them to go out in the first round wasn’t part of the plan,” he added.

January window could offer fringe players a fresh start

The early Champions League exit means Sundowns will have fewer continental fixtures in the second half of the season. That could influence how the club approaches squad selection and player management when the transfer window opens.

A loan move may give players on the fringes of the first team an opportunity to secure regular minutes elsewhere, while allowing Sundowns to retain their core group for the domestic campaign.

Jordaan’s comments suggest that any departures are more likely to involve players who need additional playing time rather than a major rebuilding exercise.

The club still has important domestic objectives to pursue, making squad depth and competition for places crucial as the season progresses.

Whether Sundowns make significant moves in January remains to be seen, but their Champions League disappointment could prompt a closer look at the players who need a change of environment.
