The University of Pretoria (UP) is investing in the next generation of female scientists, engineers and innovators through its inaugural Girls in STEM programme, aimed at helping young women from under-resourced communities see themselves as future leaders in science and technology.
Held at UP’s Sci-Enza Science Centre during Women’s Month, the programme brought together learners from six Gauteng secondary schools under the theme “From vision to impact: Her science, her future – Building South Africa’s STEM leaders.”
More than a university visit, the initiative was designed to expose young women to opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) before they make important decisions about subjects, tertiary education and careers.
For some participants, it was their first time visiting a university campus or meeting women working in scientific and research fields. Throughout the programme, learners explored laboratories, participated in practical STEM activities and engaged directly with researchers and professionals.
Creating opportunities where talent already exists
UP Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Francis Petersen said South Africa cannot afford to overlook the potential of young women as the country tackles challenges ranging from healthcare and food security to clean energy, climate resilience and digital innovation.
The programme, he said, reflects the importance of creating opportunities for learners to experiment, ask questions, meet scientists and discover their potential.
The initiative was officially launched by Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Nomalungelo Gina, who challenged participants to recognise their role in Africa’s scientific future.
She highlighted exposure, mentorship and access to opportunities as some of the barriers that prevent talented girls from pursuing STEM careers.
From inspiration to ambition
The programme also provided learners with the opportunity to meet women researchers and STEM professionals whose personal journeys demonstrated that social and economic circumstances do not have to determine their futures.
For learners such as Treasure Mahlangu of Jafta Mahlangu Secondary School in Mamelodi, the experience offered a new perspective on what could be achieved.
She said meeting successful women in science and technology gave her greater confidence and reinforced her belief that her background does not have to define her future.
Lerato Fenyane of Strauss Secondary School in Bronkhorstspruit similarly described the experience as one that made her feel “seen and valued”, while encouraging her to dream beyond the limitations she had previously associated with her circumstances.
Building a stronger STEM pipeline
UP’s Girls in STEM programme builds on the university’s broader Women in Science initiatives, including its Women in Science Symposium, which celebrates the contribution of women researchers and their impact on society.
The university says the two initiatives form part of a broader strategy: celebrating women already making a difference in STEM while creating pathways for girls who could become the next generation of researchers and innovators.
Dr Rakeshnie Ramoutar-Prieschl, Director of UP’s Department of Internationalisation and Strategic Partnerships, said the programme’s deeper impact lies in helping young women recognise that they belong in science and that their ideas can make a difference.
Ultimately, the initiative is about turning curiosity into confidence and ambition into opportunity.
For South Africa, nurturing more women in STEM is not simply about education — it is about unlocking talent that could contribute to the country’s next generation of scientific breakthroughs, technologies and solutions.
