Ma’a Nonu’s return to the rugby spotlight delivered one of the most memorable moments of the Sharks’ clash with the All Blacks in Durban.
The New Zealand rugby great made his Sharks debut during the second match of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour on Tuesday night, but before the action began, the 44-year-old found himself at the centre of an emotional pre-match moment.
As the All Blacks performed the iconic Ka Mate haka, Nonu stood opposite his former national side and responded with a one-man haka of his own.
The powerful exchange highlighted Nonu’s unique connection to New Zealand rugby and added an unforgettable chapter to his return to the game.
Nonu later came off the bench for the Sharks, although the Durban side endured a difficult night, eventually suffering a 54-0 defeat against the All Blacks.
Nonu’s new role with the Sharks
Despite making an appearance on the field, Nonu’s primary role in Durban extends beyond playing.
The two-time Rugby World Cup winner has joined the Sharks as part of a high-performance mentorship programme, designed to help develop the club’s emerging talent and strengthen its leadership and performance culture.
Working alongside Sharks head coach JP Pietersen and the coaching staff, Nonu will spend the coming months sharing his experience with the next generation of players.
For Nonu, the move also represents an opportunity to give back to the sport while returning to a city that holds special memories from his playing career.
“This is a great opportunity to give back to the game,” Nonu said, highlighting his excitement about working with the future stars of rugby.
