Kaizer Chiefs supporters will have to exercise patience before seeing new signing Elias Mokwana in action, with head coach Fernando da Cruz outlining the club’s plan to integrate the Bafana Bafana winger into the squad.
Mokwana recently completed his move to Naturena as a free agent after spells with Tunisian giants Espérance and in Saudi Arabia.
The 27-year-old’s arrival has generated excitement among Amakhosi supporters, but Da Cruz has made it clear that the club will not rush his introduction into the team.
Da Cruz reveals Chiefs’ plan for Mokwana
Speaking about the new signing, Da Cruz praised Mokwana’s ability, experience and international background. However, the Chiefs coach highlighted the challenge of joining a team without having completed a proper pre-season.
According to Da Cruz, the upcoming FIFA international break will provide an important opportunity for the technical team to work with the winger and gradually bring him up to speed.
“Elias Mokwana is a very good player, an experienced player with international experience, he has a lot of quality,” Da Cruz said.
“With no pre-season? It will be tough, but during the upcoming FIFA break, it will be the time to integrate him into the team, step by step.”
The approach suggests that Chiefs want Mokwana to regain match fitness, understand the team’s playing style and build connections with his new teammates before making his competitive debut.
Mokwana unavailable for Siwelele clash
Mokwana will not be available when Kaizer Chiefs take on Siwelele FC this weekend.
The winger’s absence means supporters will have to wait a little longer to see what he can bring to the Amakhosi attack.
The international break is expected to give him valuable preparation time, although the club has not confirmed an exact date for his first appearance.
Tough competition awaits the new Chiefs signing
Mokwana returns to the Betway Premiership with previous local experience, having represented Sekhukhune United before moving to Tunisia in 2024.
His experience with Bafana Bafana and time abroad could make him an important addition to the Chiefs squad.
However, earning a regular starting position will not be straightforward. Amakhosi already have several options in the wide attacking positions, with six wingers competing for opportunities.
Mokwana will therefore need to impress Da Cruz during training and make the most of his opportunities once he becomes available for selection.
Can Mokwana make an impact at Naturena?
Chiefs will be hoping the former Sekhukhune United attacker brings creativity, attacking quality and valuable experience to their forward line.
While his debut may take some time, the club’s decision to integrate him gradually could help him settle into the squad and adapt to Da Cruz’s expectations.
The big question now is whether Mokwana can establish himself as a key player at Naturena and win over the Amakhosi faithful.
