Makhehlene Makhaula has revealed how Orlando Pirates chairman convinced him to extend his playing career despite the midfielder previously suggesting that he would retire if the Buccaneers won the league title.
The 36-year-old veteran had indicated last season that lifting the championship would be the perfect way to bring his career to an end. Pirates went on to achieve that goal, but Makhaula surprisingly remained at the club after agreeing to another year.
According to the experienced midfielder, the decision ultimately came after a conversation with the Pirates chairman, who believed Makhaula still had enough in the tank to continue competing at the highest level.
“First of all, I would like to thank all of you, ladies and gentlemen. Yeah, it was like that, but all thanks to my chairman who said, ‘No, you still got the legs. Can you go one more? Maybe we’ll see’. I said, ‘Okay, chairman,’” Makhaula told iDiski Times.
Makhaula chasing more silverware with Pirates
Makhaula has established himself as one of the most experienced figures in the Pirates dressing room since joining the Soweto giants in his mid-30s.
During his time at Mayfair, the veteran midfielder has collected seven trophies and remains the oldest player in the current Pirates squad.
Although his involvement has been limited this season, Makhaula continues to provide experience and leadership as the Buccaneers prepare for another major final.
Pirates will face Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, with the Buccaneers looking to retain the trophy.
Despite the changes to the squad, Makhaula believes Pirates have what it takes to finish the job.
“It’s really exciting to go to another final with a different group.”
The midfielder also sounded confident about Pirates’ chances of lifting the trophy.
“I’m sensing a win; I think the guys showed up, they were great. I would just say I’m sensing the win. I’m sensing us defending the trophy.”
Will Makhaula feature against Sundowns?
The big question now is whether Makhaula will play any role in Saturday’s MTN8 final.
The veteran has seen limited action this season, but his experience could prove valuable in a high-pressure fixture against Sundowns.
Whether he makes the matchday squad or watches from the sidelines, Makhaula’s decision to continue playing has given him another opportunity to add to an already impressive trophy collection with Orlando Pirates.
