In a powerful fusion of South African heritage and modern infrastructure, music heavyweights Sjava and Big Zulu have officially partnered with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) for the groundbreaking ‘Isitimela Sabantu’ (The People’s Train) campaign.
Collaborating with marketing powerhouse Ascent Africa, the duo is championing passenger rail not just as a mode of transport, but as a vital engine for economic liberation and community dignity.
Rail as the Backbone of the Economy
The Isitimela Sabantu initiative arrives at a pivotal time for the agency. By positioning rail as the most affordable link to jobs, education, and economic hubs, the campaign highlights the critical role of trains in the daily lives of millions.
Recent data from PRASA underscores a massive resurgence in commuter trust. During the 2024/2025 financial year, the agency recorded a staggering 77 million passenger trips. This surge is credited to PRASA’s aggressive fleet modernization and infrastructure recovery projects, which have significantly bolstered reliability across the country.

“A Lifeline for Families”
For Sjava, the partnership is personal. The BET Award-winner emphasized that protecting the rail network is synonymous with protecting the livelihood of the working class.
“The train remains a lifeline for many families,” Sjava stated. “When rail works and is protected, it supports dignity and the ability to earn a living.”
PRASA echoes this sentiment, with a spokesperson noting that reliable passenger rail is fundamental to “economic participation,” specifically by drastically lowering mobility costs for households already feeling the pinch of inflation.
Massive Digital Impact
The campaign has already proven to be a viral success. In its debut month alone, Isitimela Sabantu reached over four million people, successfully rebuilding national pride in the rail system and encouraging citizens to safeguard vital infrastructure against vandalism.
