Amid swirling rumors of a move to Stellenbosch FC or arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has finally broken his silence on the status of striker Tshegofatso Mabasa.

Despite being a fan favorite and the club’s second-highest scorer in the PSL era, Mabasa has found himself sidelined, making only nine appearances this season. However, Ouaddou insists the decision is purely tactical, not personal.

Tactics Over Reputation

Speaking on 947, Ouaddou clarified that the 29-year-old’s lack of game time is a result of a crowded attacking department and a demanding “game model.”

  • A Numbers Game: With the arrival of Andre de Jong and the presence of Evidence Makgopa, Yanela Mbuthuma, Boitumelo Radiopane, and Sfiso Luthuli, the Bucs have six strikers vying for one or two spots.
  • The “Ouaddou Way”: The coach emphasized that his system requires high-intensity pressing and constant runs. “My game model is very demanding… with my staff, we are choosing players regarding the opponents,” Ouaddou explained.
  • Selection Logic: The choice of striker often depends on whether the opposition plays a high line or a mid-block, often favoring the mobility of Makgopa or Mbuthuma over Mabasa’s poaching style.

Is a Move Still on the Cards?

While Mabasa was spotted training at the Bucs camp last week, the writing may be on the wall. Having been loaned out to Swallows previously, another exit—either on loan or a permanent deal—seems likely given his “third-choice” status.

“Sometimes fans can feel that there is an injustice, but it’s just rules, and I can only play 11 players on the pitch,” said Ouaddou.
