Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly set to sign Lazola Maku, the 19-year-old captain of South Africa’s Under-20 side. The midfielder, a free agent since leaving Siwelele FC last season, has just won the COSAFA Under-20 championship with Amajita.
The report
After what is described as a successful trial in Austria in September, Maku is said to be close to joining the CAF Champions League holders and newly crowned MTN8 champions on a free transfer. The update comes from SABC Sports’ Mazola Molefe, who reported that the youngster is “closing in on a move” to Sundowns. Nothing has been confirmed by the club or the player.
From Masiphumelele to Mamelodi
Maku comes from Masiphumelele township in Hout Bay, Cape Town, and took his first steps in football at the Ubuntu Football Academy. SuperSport United later spotted him, and after several seasons in the DStv Diski Challenge he made his senior debut for Siwelele FC. Despite his age, he featured in important league matches, showing passing ability and versatility as both a defensive midfielder and a deep-lying playmaker.
A leader for Amajita
Maku has captained South Africa at Under-16 and Under-20 level. He played every minute of South Africa’s historic Under-20 AFCON triumph in Egypt, anchoring the midfield and earning a place in the tournament’s Best XI. His international record also includes the COSAFA Under-20 Championship and the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.
The question for fans
Is Sundowns the right next step for one of the country’s brightest young midfielders?
