Kaizer Chiefs may have made changes on the touchline, but former Amakhosi winger Junior Khanye believes the club’s problems extend beyond the coach.
Khanye has questioned Chiefs’ recruitment during the latest transfer window, arguing that the Soweto giants needed to bring in more quality if they were serious about challenging Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates for major honours.
Khanye calls for more quality at Chiefs
Chiefs added five players during the transfer window as they looked to strengthen their squad.
However, Khanye believes the club should have done more in the transfer market.
“For me, Chiefs’ problem isn’t just about the coach. I feel they should have signed more quality players,” Khanye told Soccer Laduma.
The former Chiefs winger also believes some members of the current squad need to produce more on the pitch.
He specifically highlighted Sibongiseni Mthethwa, suggesting the midfielder needs to make a greater contribution to the team.
“I also feel there are players who should be doing more to give the club more in their performances, and [Sibongiseni] Mthethwa is one of those players.”
Khanye added that if Mthethwa cannot provide more, questions could be asked about his place at the club.
Praise for Ndlovu and Maboe
While Khanye was critical of certain aspects of the squad, he also singled out Siphesihle Ndlovu and Lebohang Maboe for praise.
The pair have impressed in midfield and, according to Khanye, have shown noticeable improvement this season.
“Compliments to Siphesihle Ndlovu and Lebohang Maboe.”
He believes their improved performances can play an important role in helping Chiefs progress as the season develops.
Khanye also acknowledged that the midfield has shown positive signs, with the performances of Ndlovu and Maboe contributing to a change in the team’s displays.
Chiefs still chasing consistency
Kaizer Chiefs currently sit fourth in the Betway Premiership, having recorded three victories from their opening seven matches.
The club’s challenge now is to turn improved individual performances into more consistent results.
With competition from Sundowns and Pirates expected to remain intense, the debate around Chiefs’ squad depth and recruitment is unlikely to disappear.
For Khanye, the issue is therefore not simply about the coach — he believes the quality and performance of the playing squad must also be addressed.
