While most artists drop an album and hope it sticks, 1020 Cartel spearhead Sjava (Jabulani Hadebe) has spent the last 12 months conducting a masterclass in audience connection. With the official release of his new album “iNkanyezi NeZinkanyezi” on January 30, 2026, the Bergville-born star has finally revealed the “why” behind his unconventional, year-long rollout.
Sjava’s approach wasn’t just a marketing gimmick—it was a deep-seated desire to “teach” his audience how to listen before the final product even arrived.
The Learn Before You Listen Method
The rollout was structured as a trilogy, beginning in early 2025. Sjava released two live EPs—Inkanyezi (Live) and Inkanyezi 2.0 (Live)—which featured live recordings of then-unreleased songs.
Why he did it:
- Building Intimacy: Sjava wanted fans to experience the music in its rawest form first. By performing unreleased tracks on tour, he created a shared history with his audience.
- Testing the Waters: The live shows allowed him to see which songs resonated most, fine-tuning the studio versions based on the energy of the crowd.
- A “Star Among Stars”: The album title translates to “A star among the stars.” Sjava explained that the year-long process was about proving that his light only shines because of the “constellation” around him—his band, his collaborators like Msaki, Anatii, and Jesse Clegg, and, most importantly, his fans.
The Immersive Conclusion
To cap off the year-long journey, Sjava hosted an exclusive launch at the Wits Planetarium (Anglo American Digital Dome). Guests listened to the tracks while surrounded by high-tech astronomy visuals—a literal representation of the album’s celestial theme.
