The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has reinforced its status as a premier higher education institution on the continent, securing top positions across several prestigious global ranking systems.
The latest results from the inaugural QS World University Rankings: Sub-Saharan Africa place UJ at number two on the continent, confirming its sustained ascent and expanding global authority.
A Dominant Performance Across Rankings
This newest ranking complements a series of accolades that underscore UJ’s continental leadership:
- #1 in Africa: Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan African University Rankings.
- #1 in Africa: Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for societal impact.
- #1 in Africa: Among universities established less than 50 years ago.
“These rankings vindicate our university’s vision as an international university of choice anchored in the African continent and the global South,” said Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, UJ’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal.
Research Connectivity and Innovation
Notably, the QS ranking places UJ number one in Sub-Saharan Africa for International Research Network, recognizing the institution as the most connected research hub in the region. This reflects powerful cross-border collaborations and research influence that extends far beyond national boundaries.
Furthermore, UJ dominates in essential future-focused subject areas, ranking #1 in South Africa for Computer Science, Engineering, Physical Sciences, and Business and Economics, according to recent THE Subject Rankings.
Anchored in Africa: The Strategic Plan 2035
Guided by its Strategic Plan 2035, UJ has introduced unique initiatives to ground students in continental realities:
- Africa-by-Bus Programme: Taking students and academics directly into African communities to develop practical solutions to shared challenges.
- African Insight: A compulsory module for all undergraduate students covering African history, politics, and culture.
- Artificial Intelligence Module: A compulsory digital literacy module for all undergraduate students.
“Our partnerships are purposeful and impact-driven,” added Prof Mpedi. “The rankings confirm that our strategy is producing tangible results, but more importantly, they affirm that UJ is actively shaping Africa’s future.”
