The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has officially welcomed its newest cohort of students, marking the start of a transformative journey for thousands of young scholars. Following the initial university orientation, over 2,700 first-year students participated in the vibrant three-day residence orientation, setting the stage for their academic and personal growth.

With the pulsating sounds of amapiano filling the air at the Unibell residence, the atmosphere was electric with anticipation, marking a major milestone for students navigating the transition from home to university life.

A Supportive Ecosystem for Student Success

UWC has focused heavily on creating a welcoming and supportive environment, emphasizing holistic development over academics alone.

“Coming to university is about more than academics. For me, it’s about experiences, independence and enjoying life away from home.” — Kamogelo Modika, BCom Accounting student.

Key highlights of the orientation included:

  • Mental Health Support: Encouraging students to utilize university resources for emotional well-being.
  • Comprehensive Student Care: Specific initiatives for vulnerable students, ensuring all feel a sense of belonging.
  • Peer Mentorship: Connecting newcomers with experienced peer facilitators and development officers.

Diverse Paths, Shared Goals

Students from across South Africa have chosen UWC for its reputation in specific fields and the unique experience of living in Cape Town.

  • BSc Mathematics & Statistical Science: Nthando Mahlangu (17), one of the youngest students, prioritized seamless accommodation and academic fit.
  • BSc Chemical Sciences: Shameeka Pillay chose UWC for its top-tier chemistry department and the opportunity to study away from home.

“Take Hold of Your Future”

UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Robert Balfour, welcomed the students as the future leaders of the country—potential presidents, teachers, and innovators.

In his address, Prof Balfour emphasized that while opportunities abound, success requires commitment, hard work, and responsible management of their newfound independence. Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Matete Madiba, echoed this sentiment, urging students to actively participate in the university’s support ecosystems to thrive in their first year.
