The stage is set for a historic celebration of South African musical heritage. Thandiswa Mazwai has officially announced the heavy-hitting lineup of special guests and the winning opening act for her highly anticipated Sankofa Heritage Festival, taking place at Carnival City on February 28, 2026.
The festival serves as a dual milestone: celebrating Thandiswa’s 50th birthday and her 30-year legacy as a pillar of African music. With support from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s Mzansi Golden Economy initiative, the event promises a masterclass in indigenous sounds and pan-African excellence.
A Pan-African Lineup of Icons
Thandiswa will be joined by a diverse array of collaborators who span the history of South African jazz, kwaito, and folk.
Featured Special Guests:
- Jahseed: Reunited with his Bongo Maffin counterpart for a nostalgic fusion.
- Msaki & Somi: The acclaimed singer-songwriter and the Grammy-nominated international star bring contemporary soul to the stage.
- Madala Kunene & Thandi Ntuli: A meeting of the legendary “King of the Zulu Guitar” and the vanguard of modern South African jazz piano.
- Cultural Roots: The Sivuyile Traditional Dance Group will showcase powerful Xhosa choreography, while DJ Kenzhero will helm the decks to close the night.

The “Rising Star”: Vuyo Viwe Takes the Spotlight
In a move to uplift the next generation, the festival held a nationwide search for an opening act. From over 250 applicants, 25-year-old Johannesburg-based flautist and composer Vuyo Viwe (Vuyo Tshwele) emerged victorious.
Vuyo is rapidly becoming a formidable voice in the jazz scene, known for her unique blend of “Afro-esotericism.” Her sound is a complex tapestry of:
- Classical & Electronic: Layering orchestral folk with modern textures.
- Traditional Roots: Incorporating uhadi (bow) sensibilities and ngoma time signatures.
- Thematic Depth: Exploring blackness and womanhood through ceremony-inspired performances.
“I am beyond honoured to share a stage with one of my earliest and most formidable sonic heroes,” Vuyo shared. Thandiswa added that the festival is a dedicated space to ensure indigenous African music remains at the forefront of the industry.
