The University of Cape Town (UCT) saw a significant mobilization of students and the Student Representative Council (SRC) on Tuesday, following reports of alleged sexual assault and harassment involving a resident at the Forest Hill residence.

Demands for Justice and Accountability
The demonstration began on the lower campus and concluded at Forest Hill, where protesters called for justice, greater accountability, and immediate action against gender-based violence (GBV) on campus. Students emphasized that they do not feel safe in the university environment.
Following the protest, the Forest Hill warden confirmed that the student accused of sexual assault would be immediately removed from the residence, a decision welcomed by the SRC.
The SRC asserted its stance clearly: “Perpetrators have no place in our residences or our community,” and confirmed it will continue to monitor the situation to ensure lasting safety improvements.

Concerns Over Student Leadership and Reappointments
The SRC also raised concerns regarding the alleged perpetrator’s status as a student leader within the university, stating that leaders who “endanger and violate” those they are meant to represent are unacceptable. The council plans to initiate proceedings to have the student removed from their leadership position.
Furthermore, the SRC highlighted an ongoing issue at Rochester House, where a sub-warden facing unresolved allegations of GBV, sexual harassment, and grooming was reappointed last year. Expressing outrage, the council called for a comprehensive review of the warden selection process and accountability from the panel that made the reappointment.
The SRC and the Rochester House committee are scheduled to meet with residents to address student concerns and work toward systemic change.
