The next generation of South African filmmakers just got a major upgrade. A premier local university has officially opened its own dedicated on-campus cinema, designed to give students in the Media Communications and Culture Department a professional, immersive environment to showcase their directorial work.
The Venue: More Than Just a Lecture Hall
Measuring 18.5m x 8.5m and featuring 140 raked seats, the venue is a dual-purpose powerhouse. While it serves as a space for daily lectures, it has been engineered to function as a world-class Dolby Atmos 7.1.4-capable theatre.

The Tech Stack: Powered by Audac & Christie
To achieve this immersive experience, AV Distribution, Digital Fabric, and Ubuntu Technologies collaborated on a high-spec hardware integration:
| Component | Specification |
| Audio Processing | Full Audac System (SMQ1250 & SMQ500 Amplifiers) |
| Visuals | Christie M 4K15+ RGB Laser Projector |
| Screen | Da-Lite Cinema Contour (HDPro 1.1 Perforated Surface) |
| Sound Output | 630W RMS per stage speaker; 2500W RMS per subwoofer |
A Professional Standard
The inclusion of a perforated screen surface allows the Audac speakers to be placed directly behind the visuals, mimicking the exact setup of commercial cinemas. This allows students to mix and master their audio and video projects to the same standards required by international film festivals and production houses.
