In a landmark moment for South Africa’s entrepreneurial landscape, the Wits Crucible Centre for Entrepreneurship has officially graduated its very first cohort of innovators.

The fifteen graduates successfully navigated the pilot Entrepreneurship Capability Development Programme (ECDP) and are now poised to transition from theoretical ideation into the formal venture incubation phase.

From Ideas to Impact: The Journey of the “First Fifteen”

These innovators didn’t just attend classes—they stress-tested their business models through a rigorous, high-pressure curriculum. To earn their place in the next phase, students were required to demonstrate:

  • Disciplined Learning: Mastering the fundamentals of modern venture creation.
  • Structured Experimentation: Validating business ideas in real-world scenarios.
  • Resilience under Critique: Refined their propositions through expert feedback loops.
  • Viability: Proving their startups have the potential for civic renewal and social impact.

The Power of Partnerships: A Collaborative Ecosystem

Established in 2024 within Wits Business School, the Crucible is designed to rethink how African universities drive economic growth. This mission is fueled by a powerhouse network of partners:

  • Anglo American: Donated the landmark Johannesburg CBD building that serves as the Centre’s permanent home.
  • Services SETA: Provided an R84 million seed grant for infrastructure and multi-year programme development.
  • The Liberty Group: Hosted the cohort at their “Flame Station” campus during the construction of permanent facilities.
  • Jozi My Jozi: Integrating the Centre into the broader urban regeneration of Johannesburg.

The Call to Action: Scaling for 2026

During the ceremony, Professor Maurice Radebe, Director of the Faculty of Commerce, Law, and Management, emphasized that while the academic foundation is solid, the next step requires Risk Capital.

“Support is needed for the risk capital layer that allows founders to shift into full-time venture building,” Radebe stated. “Without that layer, capability remains hidden. With it, ventures scale and jobs are created.”

The Road Ahead: The Centre is aggressively scaling. For the 2026 academic year, the Wits Crucible is preparing to support a massive cohort of 250 entrepreneurs. Professor Radebe has called upon impact investors, corporate venture arms, and philanthropic organizations to join this institutional pipeline.
