The two-time Rugby World Cup-winning tighthead prop, who has been out of action since March 2025 following persistent back, neck, and hip complications, is eyeing a return to competitive rugby in January 2027.
With retirement rumors growing given his prolonged 16-month absence, his age (35), and the physical demands of front-row scrummaging, Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus confirmed that the iconic Stormers star is making every effort to return to the field.

Speaking on Malherbe’s rehabilitation progress, Erasmus expressed optimism that the veteran prop could still feature in South Africa’s plans leading up to the 2027 Rugby World Cup:
“What I know is it was a back injury, and as far as I understand when I talk to him, he’s trying his best to return,” Erasmus shared. “For me, it sounds like January is a good date for him to try and come back… I hope that works out.”
Stormers head coach John Dobson emphasized that the franchise is prioritizing Malherbe’s long-term health, managing his rehabilitation carefully alongside their tighthead depth options, which include Wilco Louw, Sazi Sandi, Herman Lubbe, and Hencus van Wyk.
