Premier Soccer League imposes a 4-week ban on uMhlathuze Sports Complex due to pitch safety. Richards Bay FC vs Kaizer Chiefs fixture forced to move.

Richards Bay FC have been hit with a major administrative setback after the Premier Soccer League (PSL) imposed an immediate four-week suspension on their home venue, the uMhlathuze Sports Complex.

The decision follows a recent stadium inspection where PSL officials determined that the playing surface fell short of professional top-flight standards, rendering it unsafe for competitive action.

Key Details of the PSL Ruling

  • Player Safety Concerns: Inspectors revealed that newly relayed turf in damaged areas failed to establish deep root systems during the off-season. Playing on the unstable pitch was deemed a high risk for player injury.
  • Effective Date: The four-week ban officially begins on 13 August 2026.
  • Rehabilitation Window: The City of uMhlathuze (facility owners) must complete urgent repairs before the league conducts a follow-up inspection to clear the venue.
  • Affected Fixtures: The Natal Rich Boys must now secure an alternative neutral venue in KwaZulu-Natal for upcoming home games—including their marquee Betway Premiership clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

Grace Period Granted

Due to the short notice of the inspection, the PSL permitted Richards Bay’s opening Betway Premiership fixture against Polokwane City to go ahead at the complex, alongside a lower-division match on 12 August, prior to the ban coming into full effect.

Club Chairman Jomo Biyela confirmed receipt of the PSL directive and reaffirmed that the municipal facility owners are working round-the-clock to restore the turf to professional standards.
